10DM Inoculated Biochar
Biochar is a form of charcoal, produced through pyrolysis in our kilns. It is used as a soil ameliorant for carbon sequestration and for overall soil health. All Thrive biochar is produced from English oak and bamboo reeds, ensuring a high carbon, low ash content, with excellent porosity and cation exchange capacity.
Mirroring the fertile Terra-Pretta ('Black Earth') of the Amazonian Indians, our biochar is effective at retaining both water and water-soluble nutrients, releasing them to the plant as required. For drought-affected regions, inoculated biochar becomes essential. NB: Never apply dry biochar to your soil as it will first soak up water due to its sponge-like porosity. All our biochar is pre-inoculated, whether sold alone or in our composts and soils.
Biochar acts like a water and mineral-retaining 'reef' in your soil, that will continue to attract microbial life for generations. If you absolutely have to use chemicals on your plants, biochar will also help retain them in the soil for longer, preventing chemical leaching into rivers etc. We would of course prefer you to use our natural, organic products instead.
Our biochar creates positive effects for soil humidity, and crop productivity and quality, reducing leaching of critical nutrients, and ensuring greater soil nutrient availability. We use a 10%-15% biochar mix in our composts and soils, which can also help reduce plant contaminant levels by up to 80%.
